Goa has been in existence for centuries under different rulers and cultures. But ever since the Portuguese navigator Vasco-da-Gama landed here in the 1400s, Goa acquired its place in the sun as the Rome of the East. The erstwhile Muslim port with a pre-dominant Hindu population became a Portuguese colony for the next 450 years until liberation in 1961 by Indian troops.
